If I were a used car salesman, that statement might send you walking of the car lot; however there is a mountain of evidence to back this up when combined with the practice of yoga. With a growing body of research supporting yoga's mental health benefits, Psychologists and Therapist are weaving the practice into their work with clients with some really cool statistics to back the transformation claim.
Recent research shows that a yoga and meditation might just accomplish this task. Yours truly has been practicing Yoga since the late nineties and this is a bit of a “wow” moment. For the pioneers of yoga who’ve been practicing in the U.S. since the '60s and '70s, this is a day they may have thought would never come.
Studies (*citations) strongly point to stress-related health problems that are responsible for up to 80% of doctor visits. These stress related problems and ailments account for a third highest health care expenditures, behind only heart disease and cancer. 3% of doctors actually talk to patients about how to reduce stress. Mind-body practices like yoga and meditation have been shown to reduce the body’s stress response by strengthening your relaxation response and lowering stress hormones like cortisol aldosterone and epinephrine. Yoga has been proven to have many health benefits, including improving heart health and helping relieve depression and anxiety.

About the Book Selection
This book is not mandatory for the 5 week series, but a good read with a lot of good insight, you don't have to be religious, a yogi, or anything like that to absorb great information from it. A lot of what the book touches on will improve anyone's life and outlook like detaching from the constant need to accumulate more and more, it just makes you nuts, declutter and simplify.

While scientists don't have quite the full picture on how yoga does what it does new research is beginning to shed light on how the practice may influence the brain.
In a 2007 study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine(Vol. 13, No. 4), researchers at Boston University School of Medicine and McLean Hospital used magnetic resonance imaging to compare levels of the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) before and after two types of activities: an hour of yoga and an hour of reading a book. The yoga group showed a 27 percent increase in GABA levels, which evidence suggests may counteract anxiety and other psychiatric disorders. GABA levels of the reading group remained unchanged.
Dr. James E. Stahl and his team of Harvard researchers studied a mind-body relaxation program offered through the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. The 8- week program taught participants several different mind-body approaches, including meditation, yoga, mindfulness, cognitive behavioral skills, and positive psychology. The study volunteers participated in weekly sessions and practiced at home as well. The researchers found that people in the relaxation program used 43% fewer medical services than they did the previous year, saving on average $2,360 per person in emergency room visits alone. This means that such yoga and meditation programs could translate into health care savings of anywhere from $640 to as much as $25,500 per patient each year. “There are many ways to get to the well state — many gates to wellness, but not every gate is open to every person. One of the strengths of the program is that it draws upon many different tools that reinforce each other and allow many gates to be opened to a wide array of people,” says principal
